It is a national institution for research in medicine and dentistry and for higher education in health care. KI trains physicians, dentists, dental technicians, physiotherapists, psychotherapists, speech therapists, and toxicologists. One-third of the physicians, the dentists and the psychotherapists and about a fourth of the physiotherapists who graduate in Sweden have received their training at KI, which is also the country's only institution for the training of toxicologists. Dental technician training started in 1993. There are about 2,500 undergraduate students and about 1,400 research students. Some 200 doctoral students receive their degree every year. Karolinska Institutet is a highly research-based institution with the main part of it's funding allocated to research. It has an international reputation in biomedical research. The Nobel Prize Laureates in Physiology or Medicine are selected by the Nobel Assembly of the Karolinska Institute. The World Health Organization (WHO) has five Collaborating Centres forResearch and Training at KI. Most departments for basic research are situated on the KI Campus, while the clinical departments are located in seven hospitals, two of which are regional hospitals with more than 1,000 beds. Dental training and research are primarily carried out at the faculty and school of dentistry in Huddinge in the south west of Stockholm. The Novum science park, also in Huddinge, conducts both basic and applied research.
