Chants of "huan ying" which means "warm welcome" came from
more than 300 children last Saturday as Gertrude Mongella,
Secretary-General of the Women's Conference walked in to
attend the Children's Mural Ceremony. Mongella was presented
with a hundred meter long hand-painted mural titled, "Be a
Wonderful Small Host in '95" from children in the Beijing
area. The ceremony was held at the Music Hall in Jongshan
Park located outside of the Forbidden city.

"This is a Conference for all of us, for men and women, for
boys and girls," said Mongella to an audience of children
aged 5-16 years old.

Waves of colorful streamers in hand, brushed Mongella as she
came to sign the mural. Children with pens ready, eagerly
awaited for Mongella's approach. Over 2,500 children were in
attendance in the park and within the Music Hall.
Performances ranging from acrobatics to band music continued
throughout the morning.

Yue-Sai Kan, arguably the most recognizable Chinese-American
woman in China, hosted the ceremonial presentation of the
mural. Her success has been in the television and cosmetic
industries. She has become a leading representative for
Chinese women at the Conference.

Chen Muhua, Vice Chairperson of the Chinese People's
Congress, thanked all the mothers and the future mothers for
being at the ceremony.

Mongella accepted the mural which is to be on display at the
Conference site for the duration of the Conference as a
reminder that all efforts within the halls of diplomacy are
for the children.
