World Public Hearing on Crimes against Women The Public Hearing is a space in which women victims of multiple forms of violence will speak their anguish, their anger, their resistance, their rebellion and their renewal. The culmination of seven Public Hearings held in different parts of the Asia Pacific Region over the past two years, "In the Court of Women" will hear about twenty women who will bring their testimonies to the violence of modern times; violence rooted in the personal terrain and the community-- like female infanticide, female circumcision and trafficking; violence generated by the nation states like wars, fundamentalism and ethnic violence; violence born out of a development vision which has brought progress for a few an poverty for the majority; vision whose homogenising world view has destroyed indigenous communities by not only fragmenting and impoverishing them but also by subsuming and eroding their diverse cosmologies. A council of wise women will listen to the testimonies and offer insights and inspiration on how to respond to such blatant human rights violations of women. The Public Hearings seeks to ultimately moves toward challenging and redrawing the dominant human rights paradigm; a paradigm whose institutions and instruments can never really gives justice and compensation to victims of its own world view; one which disposes the majority; destroys cultures and civilization, desacrilises nature, denigrates the women. WOMEN IN BLACK: A gathering of Spirit: The spirit of the world wide movement of Women in Black against violence and for peace is being brought to Beijing. All those participating in the conference are invited to join this action in which women all dressed in black will stand for one hour in silence, holding placards and banners focusing on violence against women specific to their cultures and societies. A pamphlet will distributed while there will also be other portrayals of protest and solidarity. In the last fifteen Minutes of the event, women will light and hold lamps that have been brought from their own cultures as symbols of hope- for peace. DAY OF TARA Part of "Daughters of the Earth" being organised by Women Environment and Development Organisation (WEDO) in their seven day long Peace Web, this day is meant to be a celebration of peace and denunciation of militarism. Four panels will look deeper at the various dimensions of the issue. The making of military myth: a violent world view; The Right to Life in the atomic age and the effects of radiation; War and its effects on women; Women in Peace movements. At the last panel will speak members of groups like Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo, Women in Black movement and other peace movements in different parts of the world like Bosnia - Herzegovinia which have been attempting to confront war and 'fight' for peace in situations of intense conflict and aggression. RUGS OF WOVEN MAGIC Quilting in almost all cultures and societies have been woman's art of survival into which she has woven her hopes, her struggles, her protest, her dreams, her life visions. Phad, a folk form of traditional story telling speaks of the violence of dowry through the story of fireas life, as destroyer, as anger and protest.
