We had planned two workshops, one entitled "Strategies for Public Education on Domestic Violence" and another entitled "Domestic Violence: Comparing Women's Journeys Through the Legal System." Unfortunately, the NGO Forum office "lost" our application for the latter workshop, so we have only space and time for the former. We would like to appeal to anyone interested in our Public Education workshop to attend; it will be September 3 at 9a.m. in Room 20-T51. Also, if any other NGOs are planning something similar to our Women's Journeys workshop and would like to collaborate, we would be very interested. Please contact us at any of the addresses (electronic, telephonic, or otherwise) below. Strategies for Public Education on Domestic Violence: This panel discussion will provide information to participants on various strategies used to educate the public on domestic violence from around the United States, and will include educators from Minnesota, which has been a leader in creative responses to this issue. The panel will discuss education throug the media with specific examples from national magazines and television advertisements. It will include a discussion of education on violence in the schools and in adult education groups. Samples of educational materials will be available. Minnesota Advocates has surveyed key domestic violence organizations across the United States, gather information on methods used to educate the public and ascertaining from interviews which methods are most successful. This information will be compiled into a comprehensive report, issued by Minnesota Advocates, to share with domestic violence advocacy groups worldwide, but especially in Eastern Europe as they originally requested this information. Domestic Violence: Comparing Women's Journeys through Legal Systems: This workshop will begin with a presentation of international legal protections against domestic violence. Following will be a discussion of specific legislative solutions that have been implemented in the U.S. and other countries. The workshop will feature three fictional case studies of victims of domestic violence, focusing on each case as the victim journeys through the criminal court system attempting to prosecute her partner. A discussion of the efficacy of each system will follow. Minnesota Advocates has engaged in a multinational study of the systems of legal protection and prosecution for victims of domestic violence. Minnesota Advocates has conducted missions to Romania, Bulgaria, and Albania as part of its information gathering.
