------------------------------------------------------- From: CCPNGW::"HEPSSC@SSCVX1.ssc.gov" 22-SEP-1993 01:45:47.62 To: subscriber@ssc.gov Interim Bulletin: September 21, 1993 This morning the Senate Energy and Water Appropriations Subcommittee held a mark-up on their Fiscal 1994 appropriations bill (H.R. 2445). The recommendation for the Fermilab Main Injector was reported at $25 million (same as the budget request), and the SSC at $640 million (same as the request). The bill now moves to the full Senate Appropriations Committee, which is expected to mark up the bill on Thursday, September 23. During the very brief subcommittee mark-up today, there was no debate on the SSC - only some laudatory remarks by Subcommittee Chairman Bennett Johnston (D-La.); no opponents spoke (except jokingly asking to be excused if the Chairman decided to give a major pro-SSC speech during the mark-up). After the meeting adjourned, however, Johnston was approached by reporters, whereupon he launched into a lengthy description of the project's progress, successes, scientific promise, and bright future. He expressed confidence in the outcome in the Senate (floor action tentatively September 28). During a post-markup briefing, the overall number for the General Science and Research Activities account was referred to as $1.6 billion -- with High Energy Physics at $612 million and Nuclear Physics at $353 million. However, it had been stressed at the beginning of the markup and was again stressed at the end of the markup that many of the situations in the bill are in a somewhat fluid state, meaning that the real import of the line- by-line listings will not be understood until the full-committee markup on Thursday, when the aggregate budget environment of the bill will be more completely known. Also of note was a Q&A exchange in which a reporter asked about the B-factory. Johnston said it was listed at zero in the Senate version. On a follow-up question, Johnston said that was simply because they were waiting for a report from the DOE about the site competition. Since there are funds in the House version of the bill, the matter can be negotiated in conference. More-thorough details will be provided as they become available. -------------------------------------------------------
