"The roots of the cohomology of groups on the algebraic side lie in the work of Issai Schur at the beginning of the century. The Schur multiplier of a group is today denoted by H{'2}(G,Z). It was then further developed by Otto Schreier and became important in the development of class field theory, which was put in definite form by John Tate, making use of the cohomology of Galois groups, about 1950. In the 1930s and 1940s it was also realized that these objects were cohomology groups of certain topological spaces, and this led ultimately to the development of homological algebra. Roughly speaking, the cohomology of a group G is the cohomology of the classifying space BG of G, thus algebraic topology has a lot to say in the theory of cohomology of groups. In this book algebraic topology is not used, the subject is developed from the perspective of homological algebra." (Peter Michor). D. Greene: Gröbner bases and the computation of group cohomology.
