Subject: Dan Shanks

Dear Colleagues:

I regret to inform you that Daniel Shanks passed away on Friday,
September 6 due to heart failure.  He would have been 80 in January.
He will be remembered not only for his foundational work in
Computational Number Theory, but also  for his work in  promoting
this important area through his pivotal  role in the development
of the journal, Mathematics of Computation.

There will be a graveside memorial service at the George Washington
Cemetery at 9500 Riggs Road in College Park, Maryland at 10 am
on Wednesday September 11.
