From 70372.1170@compuserve.comWed Oct 11 21:47:25 1995 Date: Wed, 11 Oct 1995 07:51:05 EDT From: Harvey Dubner <70372.1170@compuserve.com> To: Multiple recipients of list NMBRTHRY Subject: Record Sophie Germain I would like to announce that I have regained the record for the largest Sophie Germain prime. Having lost the record about 8 months ago I suspect that this latest record will not last very long since prime searching can be done with many computers in parallel and the numbers of computers keep increasing and getting faster. The following Sophie Germain prime was found on Oct 3, 1995: P = 2687145 * 3003 * 10^5072 - 1 , prime with 5082 digits Q = 2 * P + 1 , companion prime with 5083 digits The previous record was 4932 digits. It took an average of 6 PC's (4 PC 486/33's and 2 PC 486/66's) about 40 days to find the two related primes. This was somewhat longer than the expected time. All the computers were equipped with Cruncher cards which increased the speed of these computers by 50-100 times. If anyone wants any technical or sales information about the Dubner Cruncher just ask. Talking about Crunchers is my favorite subject. I would like to send my congratulations in advance to the next Sophie Germain record breaker. Harvey Dubner
