From: Henri Cohen To: Multiple recipients of list NMBRTHRY The new release 1.38 of the free software package Pari/GP is now available by anonymous ftp from megrez.ceremab.u-bordeaux.fr (147.210.16.17), and soon at other sites like math.ucla.edu or ftp.inria.fr. Although the version number is just 0.01 more than the preceding one, the changes compared to the widely circulated 1.37 are quite major. In particular, there is now a complete package for algebraic number theory computations including handling of ideals, prime ideals, ideals, prime ideal factorization, p-adic factorization etc..., but also class group and unit computations as well as finding generators of prinicpal ideals. Many other new programs and improvements are explained in the file Newin1.38 distributed with the package. The package itself comes with a 130 page reference manual plus a 30 page tutorial in TeX. Presently, only the Unix version is available, but Mac, PC386 and Amiga binaries should be available sometimes soon. Also note that an experimental version for 64-bit machines (in view of the DEC Alpha processor) is included. It still has bugs, but is usable (please send bug reports on this version!). With a 100 line alpha assembler file still to be written (help anyone?), it should run about 4 times faster than a sparcstation 10/41! Please send all bug reports and contributions to pari@ceremab.u-bordeaux.fr and all specific Mac related questions to bernardi@mathp7.jussieu.fr (Note: people who have never heard of Pari/GP are encouraged to test this software. It is usually much faster than Maple or Mathematica on the things it knows how to do, and it contains a number of very sophisticated number-theoretic algorithms.) Henri Cohen PS1. An amiga binary (without hires plotting) is now available (directory pub/amiga) PS2. The file dummy.c, which is used only with the Pari library but not with GP itself, has not been updated in 1.38. So take the development version 1.38.xx (xx>=01) to correct this. Best, Henri
