It combines the strengths of chapters written by authorities with a conscious effort to avoid being encyclopedic. The first part of the book is devoted to the cell biology of the liver and the pathophysiology of liver disease. Chapters on diagnostic studies for liver and biliary disease follow. The remainder of the book is devoted to special liver diseases and to questions of liver transplantation and a chapter on the diagnosis of jaundice. This book is authoritative, well written and up to date. Hans-Dieter Kuntz/Erwin Kuntz: Hepatology - principles and practice. Springer 2005, 910p. Pds 123. Lockwood: Hepatic encephalopathy. Butterworth-Heinemann 1992, 150 p. ISBN 0-7506-9324-0. $45. Of the nine chapters of the book, five deal with different candidate neurotoxins that have been studied over the past four decades. Not very precise are the brief sections on clinical aspects of the syndrome. Oxford Textbook of Clinical Hepatology. Oxford University Press, 1550 p. in 2 volumes. ISBN 0-19-261968-3. $ 250. The numerous authors and the many short chapters lead to a sense of fragmentation and the feeling that one is reading an encyclopedia or, at times, a dictionary. Yet chapters are written by authorities and one can find at a glance bits of information that are often difficult to locate in other books. 18640 Gerd Pape/Burkhard Göke: Hepatologie für die Praxis.
