New Scientist 19 June 1993, 10. For women infected by HIV, deciding whether to breast-feed or bottle-feed is complicated by the risk that the baby might become infected through breast milk. Babies can be infected with HIV by their mothers while in the womb, during birth and through breast milk. Birth itself may be the most dangerous time, but scientists still do not know the contribution each route makes to the number of infections.
