General Information
The DEPARTMENT of CANCER RESEARCH (Centro Interdipartimentale di Ricerche
sul Cancro "Giorgio Prodi" - CIRC) is situated in Bologna's University
Hospital area and was created in 1984 initially by 6 University's
Institutions. In 1987 other Institutions were admitted, for a total of 17.
The aim of this Department is to manage Oncological researches and
to assure continuous information among different Institutions
whit similar activities.
This Department, actually directed by Prof.Guido Paolucci, was created
by the will of Prof.Giorgio Prodi and his conviction that Oncology has
to be characterized by a close interaction between biology and clinics.
As of October 1, 1993, the Department's staff consists of 73
researchers, belong to 5 University's Departments:

and 12 Medicine and Surgery Institutes:

General support for Department activities consist of 1800 millions of
Italian Lire (1,2 millions $) per year, from research's agreements.
Department's office consists of 120 sqm divided in laboratories and
secretaries' office and is located
in Pathological Anatomy's and Histology's building.
Research at the Department can be divided into 2 main categories:
clinical and biological.
In CLINICAL field, these are the main investigation topics:
- Combined treatment of localized Osteosarcoma
- Cell proliferation markers in Thyroid tumors
- In vivo Immune-toxic Therapy in Lymph-proliferative syndromes
- Phenotypical characterization as guide for therapy in Lymphomas
- Prevention of Colon-Rectal Cancer in Ulcerous Colitis
- Multi-disciplinary therapeutic strategy in Ewing's Sarcoma
- Molecular diagnosis and monitoring of Minimal Residual Disease in
Chronic Myeloid Leukemia
- Cell proliferation in prognosis of Breast Cancer
In BIOLOGICAL field, these are the main investigation topics:
- Relationship between extra-cell matrix and tumoral cells
- Pharmacological study on cell cultures of Osteosarcoma
- Characterization of cell lines of Medulloblastoma
- Phenotypic and Genotypic prognostic factors and chemosensitivity
in Neuroblastoma
- In vitro growth control of leukemic blasts
- Punctiform mutations identification in Gs protein in Tyroid Cancer
- Cancer risk evaluation by new substances utilization in Industry and
Agriculture
- Phenotypic modulation of extra-cell matrix in neoplastic progression
- Study on gene containing homeobox sequences in growth and
differentiation in primitive Central Nervous System Tumors
Another important activity is devoted to the management and the analysis
of clinical trials Data of the National Task Force for Pediatric Oncology
(Forza Operativa Nazionale di Oncologia Pediatrica - FONOP) by FONOP
