Anyone who has an interest in Waldorf education, however, is encouraged to join. Waldorf education has a stated goal of "educating the whole child", in "heart, head and hands". The first Waldorf school was started in 1919 in Stuttgart, Germany by the Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner (1861-1925). Today, there are more than 500 Waldorf schools in 32 countries. In North America, there are 91 schools affiliated with the Association of Waldorf Schools of North America as well as a public Waldorf program in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. As an opener, it would be interesting to know the following: 1. How many children do you have who attend/will be attending/might be attending a Waldorf school? What are their names and ages? {My answer: 1, Maggie, 5 3/4 (just ask her)} 2. What Waldorf school do your children attend/are you looking into? {My answer: Santa Cruz Waldorf School} 3. What grades does the school offer? {My answer: K-8} 4. How many children attend the school? {My answer: Don't know} 5. How did you hear about Waldorf schooling? {My answer: they had a booth at a local children's fair and were making literature available. My wife and I remembered it and decided to look into it once we determined that we didn't want to send Maggie to public school. We also have friends whose children attend/will be attending the school.} 6. How many years of Waldorf schooling have your children had? {My answer: None.} 7. Have you done any reading or research into the philosophy behind Waldorf schooling, or on Anthroposophy in general? {My answer: I've read _Toward Wholeness_ by M.C. Richards (on Steiner education) and _Scientist of the Invisible_, by A.P. Shepherd (bio of Steiner and an overview of Anthroposophy} 8. Are there any particular subjects you're interested in seeing discussed on the list? 9. What would you ideally hope to get out of this mailing list? 10. Can you suggest any ways in which the list might be improved? 11. Would you be willing for your contributions to the list to be shown to people who aren't currently subscribers? {My answer: Yes} -- Lefty (lefty@apple.com) C:.M:.C:., D:.O:.D:. --- Subject: Welcome to the Waldorf Education Mailing List Dear Lindsay, Marilyn, Morton, Al, Josef, Heather, and Elaine, Thanks for your interest in the Waldorf Education mailing list. I'm glad to have you aboard. To post to the list, send mail to . The list is unmoderated, and any relevant topic is welcome. There's also a small anonymous ftp directory on netcom.com. There are several articles on Waldorf education there. Things can currently be downloaded but not uploaded. To connect, ftp to netcom.com, then cd to pub/dns. ============================================================================== Some background: My name is David Schlesinger (aka "Lefty"), and my daughter Margaret (age 5 3/4) will be starting kindergarten at the Santa Cruz Waldorf school this fall. I've become quite interested in the Waldorf approach to education, as well as in the general philosophy which underlies it, and I'm hoping that this list will serve as a sort of online community/discussion group on Waldorf schooling, philosophical issues associated with it, how our kids are responding to it, concerns, observations, etc. As an opening topic, I'd think introductions are in order. I've sent out a small survey that many members of the list have responded to in a separate message; I'd appreciate it if you would as well, so people can get to know you and your interests. Secondly, I've just finished reading _Toward Wholeness_ by M. C. Richards, which seemed like a pretty good introduction to Waldorf education (aside from a slight tendency to wander into poetic fancy). I've also gotten A. C. Harwood's _Life of a Child_, but haven't started on it yet. Any other good "overview" type books anyone would care to recommend? Also, has anyone here joined the American Waldorf School Association? What sort of information or services do they provide? Again, welcome, and I hope that this list turns out to be a benefit to us! -- Lefty (lefty@apple.com) C:.M:.C:., D:.O:.D:. --- 1.
