New Scientist 19 June 1993, 44-45. There is a great concern in the West about 
declining standards of literacy in schools. For the past two decades, 
illustrations in reading primers have become increasingly detailed and 
obstrusive, while the language has become impoverished. There is virtually 
no empirical evidence to support the use of illustrations in teaching reading,
and a great deal of empirical evidence shows that pictures interfere in a 
damaging way with all aspects of learning to read. As they grow older, many 
children turn aside from books without pictures.
